Common Air Cargo Container Types
Air cargo containers vary in size and design to accommodate different types of cargo. These containers are used for transporting goods via airfreight and can be divided into several categories:
- LD-3 Containers: containers are widely used for transporting small to medium-sized cargo. They are typically used for carrying luggage, perishables, or smaller goods. Their standardized size makes them suitable for efficient packing and loading.
- LD-8 Containers: are larger and offer more space for cargo. They are often used for transporting oversized or irregularly shaped items, such as machinery or industrial equipment. These containers provide greater flexibility in loading and securing cargo.
- LD-11 Containers: LD-11 containers are similar in size to LD-8 containers but are equipped with specialized features for temperature-sensitive cargo. These containers maintain a controlled environment, making them ideal for perishable goods, pharmaceuticals, and other sensitive products.
- Pallets and Pallet Containers: Pallets are commonly used for air cargo transportation. They provide a convenient way to load and unload cargo quickly. Pallet containers, such as the PMC and PAG containers, are designed to accommodate standard-sized pallets, making them efficient for handling various types of cargo.
- ULD Containers: Unit Load Devices (ULDs) are essential in air cargo. These containers come in various sizes, including ULD AKH, AKE, and AKC. ULD containers are used for transporting a wide range of goods, including mail, general cargo, and specialized equipment. They are designed for easy loading onto aircraft, ensuring quick turnaround times.
- Temperature-Controlled Containers: Specialized air cargo containers with temperature control capabilities, such as Envirotainers and CSafe, are crucial for shipping pharmaceuticals, biotechnology products, and other goods that require strict temperature control to maintain their integrity during transport.
